Under current COVID-19 safe working guidance, employees are being encouraged by the Government to stay away from their office and work from home, if they can. If your employer is not reimbursing you, this presents a new opportunity to claim tax relief for additional household costs, if you have to work at home on a regular or ad-hoc basis, so long as it is required by your employer for at least a single occasion throughout the 2020-21 tax year. Such additional household costs include: Heating Water Home contents insurance Business telephone calls To make the claim with HM Revenue & Customs, you can either claim for actual costs or claim a standard £6 per week flat rate instead. You may also be able to claim tax relief on work related equipment you've bought, such as a laptop, chair or mobile phone.
